Ben Gould for Berkeley City Council

Why I'm Running

Berkeley faces some difficult times ahead. With uncertainty at the national level, it's critically important that we remain a beacon of progress. I believe we can set an example for what can be accomplished locally.

I am running for City Council to make Berkeley more affordable, inclusive, and sustainable; and I am eager to serve my neighbors in District 4 and the community as we pursue progressive solutions to Berkeley’s challenges. I believe in staying true to our shared values of diversity, equal access to opportunity, and leadership in social and environmental issues.

I will work with other City Councilmembers and Berkeley residents to create more affordable housing, continue the revitalization of Downtown, fight climate change, adopt responsible budgets, and restore Berkeley’s public infrastructure. To learn more about my policy positions and the challenges Berkeley faces, visit my Issues page.

I am proud to have the endorsements of State Senator Nancy Skinner, the Berkeley Democratic Club, four current and former Councilmembers, all endorsing ASUC and Graduate Assembly Executives, The Daily Californian, dozens of commissioners and community leaders, and many others.

Berkeley is my home, and I will never stop fighting to build a better future for our city and for generations to come. I look forward to the opportunity to earn your vote. If you have any questions, feel free to reach me at ben@bengould.org

Meet Ben

Ben is the immediate past Chair of the City of Berkeley's Community Environmental Advisory Commission, and a Masters of Public Policy (and Master of Science in Environmental Engineering) candidate at UC Berkeley.

Born and raised in Berkeley, Ben graduated from Berkeley High School and UC San Diego. He has worked as an engineer at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, as a policy analyst at The International Council for Clean Transportation, and currently works at UC Berkeley's Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL) conducting research on climate policy and emissions modeling.

Ben has built a wide-ranging record of service to the community. While serving on the Community Environmental Advisory Commission, Ben fought for public health, working to protect children from lead poisoning and to implement indoor air quality requirements for new construction. Ben’s service to the City has also included appointments to the Housing Advisory Commission and the Zoning Adjustments Board.

As a representative in UC Berkeley’s student government, he secured full and fair health coverage for LGBT students, and brought the College of Chemistry into compliance with the University’s Zero Waste program. In his role as a student leader, Ben also built partnerships between Cal students, Berkeley school children, and their parents to construct a rainwater harvester at Jefferson Elementary School. Now, he serves on the Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund Advisory Board, building bridges between the University and the City.
